Everyone deserves to feel confident showing off their smile. However, many people feel self-conscious about their crooked teeth. Fortunately, with modern dental advancements, achieving a straight and healthy smile is more accessible than ever.

The most common ways to fix crooked teeth are traditional braces or clear aligner trays. Ultimately, the best way to fix crooked teeth is whichever treatment suits your oral needs and is the most comfortable for you and your lifestyle.

Why Straighten Crooked Teeth?

Crooked teeth aren’t just a cosmetic concern; they can also affect your oral health. Misaligned teeth can cause a variety of oral health problems, including:

  • Increased risk of gum disease.
  • Increased risk of cavities.
  • Uneven grinding and wear on teeth.
  • Increased strain on jaw muscles and jaw pain.
  • Problems with chewing.
  • Speech impediments

By prioritizing your dental health and addressing crooked teeth, you’re taking proactive steps toward a healthier future. A straighter smile offers both immediate and long-term benefits. Not to mention that having straight teeth can make you look and feel your best!

Traditional Braces

Traditional metal braces have been a reliable solution for correcting crooked teeth for decades. These braces use metal brackets attached to each tooth. The brackets are connected by wires that exert pressure over time to gradually move the teeth into alignment.

One of the major advantages of traditional braces is their effectiveness. They can correct even severe cases of misalignment and are suitable for both children and adults. Modern braces are more comfortable and less noticeable, making them a viable option for many.

However, traditional braces do require regular maintenance, which means visits to the orthodontist for adjustments. They may also be less comfortable than other options, and might cause some people to feel self-conscious about their appearance, as braces are visible when you smile or speak.

Despite these drawbacks, however, traditional braces remain a popular choice due to their proven efficacy.

Clear Aligners

Clear aligners, such as SureSmile, offer a more discreet way to straighten teeth. These custom-made, transparent trays fit snugly over your teeth and gradually shift them into place over time. Clear aligners are removable, allowing for easier cleaning and eating without dietary restrictions.

The primary advantage of clear aligners is their nearly invisible appearance, which makes them an attractive choice for those who prefer a subtle treatment. Aligners are also more comfortable than traditional braces, as they lack the brackets and wires that can irritate the mouth.

One consideration when choosing clear aligners is the need for discipline. You’ll need to wear them for at least 20-22 hours per day for effective results. Additionally, while clear aligners can treat many cases of crooked teeth, they may not be suitable for severe misalignments.

Non-Traditional Braces

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces offer a unique approach to teeth straightening. Similar to traditional braces, they use brackets and wires, but these are placed on the inside surfaces of the teeth rather than in front, making them virtually invisible from the outside.

This relative discretion is the main advantage of lingual braces—they’re effective even for complex cases without affecting the appearance of your smile.

However, they may take some time to get used to, as they can affect speech initially and may be less comfortable for the tongue.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional metal braces, but they use tooth-coloured or clear brackets, making them less noticeable. They work in the same way as metal braces do—by gradually moving your teeth into alignment through pressure from the connected wires.

The main advantage of ceramic braces is their aesthetic appeal. They’re less conspicuous than metal braces, making them a popular choice for those who are self-conscious about their smile.

Ceramic braces can treat a wide range of alignment issues, including more severe cases that might not be suitable for clear aligners.

Retainers

After completing orthodontic treatment, retaining your newly aligned teeth is crucial. Retainers help maintain the corrected position of your teeth, preventing them from shifting back to their original alignment.

There are two main types of retainers: fixed and removable. Fixed retainers consist of a thin wire bonded to the back of your teeth, while removable retainers are custom-made appliances you can take out as needed.

Maintaining Dental Hygiene During Treatment

A person with blue braces uses an electric tooth brush to gently clean their braces after a meal.

Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential throughout orthodontic treatment to ensure the best results. Braces, aligners, and other orthodontic appliances can create additional surfaces for food particles and plaque to accumulate, increasing the risk of cavities and gum disease.

It’s important to brush and floss diligently, using specialized tools like interdental brushes or floss threaders to clean around brackets and wires. Make sure to remove clear aligners during meals and clean them regularly to prevent buildup.

Regular dental check-ups and cleanings are also vital during treatment to monitor oral health and address any concerns promptly. By staying committed to oral hygiene, you can protect your teeth and gums and maximize the effectiveness of treatment.
