The short answer
A dental emergency is any problem that needs care within hours or a day to stop severe pain, control bleeding or infection, or save a tooth. Call Palermo Village Dental, your dentist in Oakville, at 647-584-0017 for a knocked-out or broken tooth, a throbbing toothache, facial swelling or a lost crown, and we’ll try to see you the same day.
Some problems feel scary but can safely wait a day, like a small chip with no pain. Others can’t wait, like a swollen face or a tooth knocked out of its socket. Many urgent visits start with a quick exam and X-ray, then move into general dentistry treatment such as a filling, root canal or extraction.
Pain and fear make it hard to think straight. We get that. If you’re anxious about treatment, sedation dentistry can help you get through the visit calmly, and our team will explain each step before we start.
Broke a tooth? You may not need two visits. With CEREC same-day crowns, many broken teeth are restored in one appointment. You can request an emergency appointment online, but for anything urgent, calling is faster.
Where to go
Most dental emergencies belong in a dental chair. A few need a hospital first.
In Oakville, that means Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital or 911.
Phone 647-584-0017 as early in the day as you can.
Why the ER isn’t always the answer: hospital teams are excellent at controlling infection, swelling and pain. Most hospitals in Ontario don’t have a dentist on hand to fix the tooth itself, so you’ll still need a dental visit afterwards to deal with the cause.
What we treat
These are the urgent problems we see most often, and what usually causes them.
Usually deep decay or an inflamed nerve. Throbbing pain that keeps you up at night needs prompt care.
The most time-sensitive emergency. Adult teeth replanted within about an hour have the best chance of surviving.
From biting ice, popcorn kernels or old fillings. Pain on biting and releasing is a classic sign.
A pocket of infection at the root or gum. It won’t go away by itself and can spread.
Exposed tooth can be sensitive and weak. Keep the crown and bring it with you.
Cracked dentures, snapped braces wires and broken aligners or night guards.
Soft tissue injuries from falls or sports. Deep cuts may need stitches.
Worsening pain 2 to 4 days after a tooth removal can mean a dry socket.
First aid
Do these things on the way to the dentist. They can make a real difference to the outcome.
| Emergency | Do this now | Avoid this |
|---|---|---|
| Toothache | Rinse with warm water, floss gently around the tooth, take over-the-counter pain relief as directed | Putting aspirin on the gum, which burns the tissue |
| Knocked-out adult tooth | Hold it by the crown, rinse briefly, put it back in the socket or store it in milk | Scrubbing the root or wrapping it in tissue |
| Broken tooth | Save the pieces, rinse, use a cold compress on the cheek | Chewing on that side |
| Swelling | Cold compress 15 minutes on, 15 off, call us right away | Heat packs, or waiting for it to go down |
| Lost crown | Keep it safe, use dental cement from a pharmacy as a short-term fix | Superglue or household glue |
| Bleeding gum or lip | Firm pressure with clean gauze for 15 to 20 minutes | Rinsing hard over and over |
| Object stuck between teeth | Floss carefully on both sides | Pins, toothpicks or anything sharp |
Time matters
A knocked-out adult tooth has the best chance of being saved if it’s back in the socket within about 30 to 60 minutes. Here’s exactly what to do:
Don’t put a knocked-out baby tooth back in. It can damage the adult tooth growing underneath. Call us so we can check your child’s mouth and the area for injury.
Your visit
Here’s what to expect when you come in, so there are no surprises.
We ask what happened, how bad the pain is and whether there’s swelling or fever. That tells us how fast you need to be seen.
We look at the area and take X-rays. If we need to see roots, bone or a fracture line in 3D, CBCT imaging gives a clear picture.
Local freezing gets you comfortable before anything else. Sedation is available if you’re very anxious.
That might mean draining an abscess, starting a root canal, smoothing a broken edge, re-cementing a crown or removing a tooth that can’t be saved.
Many broken teeth can be rebuilt the same day with a filling or a CEREC crown, so you don’t leave with a temporary.
You’ll get aftercare instructions, any prescriptions you need, and a plan for follow-up if the tooth needs more work.
Broken tooth repair
A cracked or broken tooth often needs a crown. Here’s how the two methods compare.
| Factor | Traditional crown | CEREC same-day crown |
|---|---|---|
| Number of visits | Usually 2, about 2 weeks apart | Usually 1 |
| Temporary crown | Yes, worn between visits | No |
| Impressions | Often putty trays | Quick digital scan |
| Freezing | Twice, once per visit | Once |
| Material | Ceramic, metal-ceramic or gold | High-strength ceramic |
| Best for | Complex cases, some back teeth with heavy bite forces | Most broken and cracked teeth that need a crown fast |
Our take: for a sudden break, a same-day crown means you protect the tooth right away and skip the weeks of babying a temporary. Some complex cases still do better with a traditional lab crown, and we’ll tell you which fits.
Warning signs
Not every problem needs a same-day visit. But these signs shouldn’t wait more than a day or two:
If a severe toothache disappears on its own, the nerve inside may have died. The infection can keep spreading quietly. Get it checked even if it feels better.
Complete health dentistry
Palermo Village Dental practises complete health dentistry, which means we treat your mouth as part of your whole body. Emergencies show that connection clearly.
An abscess can move into the jaw, face and neck. In rare cases it becomes life-threatening. That’s why swelling always gets priority.
Infection makes diabetes harder to control, and high blood sugar slows healing. Treating dental infections quickly helps both.
Research links long-term gum and dental inflammation with heart disease. We’ll ask about heart conditions and medications before any treatment.
Many cracked teeth come from night grinding. Grinding can be linked with jaw problems and sometimes with sleep apnea, so we screen for it and can arrange a MATRx Plus home sleep test or SleepImage Ring.
Technology
When you’re in pain, every extra visit hurts. These tools help us diagnose faster and fix more in one appointment:
Appliances
Dental appliances can break at the worst times. Here’s how to handle the common ones.
Push it flat with the eraser end of a pencil or cover it with orthodontic wax, then call to have it trimmed.
Switch to your previous tray, or the next one if it fits, and call us. Don’t wear a tray with sharp edges.
Keep all the pieces and skip the home repair kits. Glue can warp the fit. We can often repair or reline it.
Stop chewing on it and call us soon. The screw usually just needs tightening, but waiting can damage the parts.
Avoid these
We see these every month. Each one makes treatment harder.
Swelling means active infection. It may shrink for a while, then come back worse.
Antibiotics calm infection, but they can’t clean out the tooth. The problem returns if the cause isn’t treated.
Household glue can damage the tooth and make the crown impossible to re-cement properly.
The root surface has fragile cells that help it reattach. Rinse briefly and keep it moist.
A crack can spread down into the root. Once it splits, the tooth often can’t be saved.
Stick to the dose on the package. Doubling up can harm your liver or stomach.
Typical scenarios
These are composite examples based on common cases, with details changed. They show what’s possible, not a promise.
A 39-year-old bites down on a kernel at a movie and half a molar breaks off. She calls the next morning, gets an exam and X-ray, and leaves the same afternoon with a CEREC crown.
A 14-year-old takes a stick to the mouth and knocks out a front tooth. His dad puts it in milk and they arrive within 40 minutes. The tooth is replanted and splinted, with follow-up visits to watch the nerve.
A 58-year-old had a sore tooth that settled after a course of antibiotics from a walk-in clinic. Three months later his cheek swells again. The X-ray shows an infection at the root, and a root canal treats the cause.
Kids and teens
Kids fall off bikes, run into coffee tables and take elbows to the face in sports. Most children’s dental injuries look worse than they are, but a few need care fast.
A small chip on a baby tooth with no pain, a baby tooth that’s loose because it’s ready to come out, or mild gum soreness from new teeth coming in.
Stay calm, because kids take their cue from you. A cold compress, a clean cloth for bleeding and a quick call to our office are usually all you need to start. We see children as part of our family care, and we’ll check both the injured tooth and the adult tooth developing underneath.

Myths and safety
A few beliefs that can cost people their teeth.
Fact: an infected tooth can go quiet when the nerve dies. The infection can still spread.
Fact: the hospital manages pain, swelling and infection. Repairing or saving the tooth happens at a dental office.
Fact: adult teeth replanted quickly, especially within an hour, can often be saved.
Fact: a chip can hide a deeper crack. If it’s sensitive or sharp, get it checked.
Safety note: if you have swelling that spreads toward your eye or neck, trouble breathing or swallowing, or a high fever, go to the emergency department or call 911 right away. This page is general information and doesn’t replace an exam and diagnosis by a licensed dentist.
Prevention
Most emergencies we see were small problems first. These habits stop a lot of them.
For hockey, basketball, martial arts and even skateboarding. A custom guard fits better and gets worn more.
Ice, hard candy, pen caps and popcorn kernels crack more teeth than anything else we see.
A small filling today avoids a root canal or extraction later.
A night guard spreads the force of clenching and protects fillings and crowns.
Exams and X-rays catch cracks, decay and old fillings before they fail.
Opening packages and bottle caps with your teeth is a fast way to chip one.
Be ready
A small kit in the bathroom cabinet or sports bag saves panic later. Here’s what we suggest:
